Diabetes Symptoms In Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes

DId you know that diabetes type 1 and type 2 usually presents in different ways and have different symptoms?

The symptoms that you can get in diabetes type 1, or insulin dependent diabetes is usually dramatic, whereas in type 2 it can be more gradual in onset.

So let's go through some of the symptoms that you can have in the 2 types of diabetes.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

The symptoms of insulin depenedent diabetes mellitus includes:

1. Increase in thirst

2. Increase in drinking

3. Increase in urination

4. Increased hunger

5. Weight loss (despite eating more)

6. Very high blood glucose levels leading to drowsiness, being unwell, loss of consciousness and coma. This can happen suddenly and is a medical emergency requiring urgent medical attention.

So as you can see, the symptoms can be sudden and severe, and can even happen in childhood as well as in teengers and adults.

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

The symptoms of non insulin depenedent diabetes mellitus includes:

1. Increase in thirst

2. Increase in drinking

3. Increase in urination

4. Increased infections.

For example, skin bacterial infections, fungal infections (eg thrush or tinea), urinary tract infections, and other infections

5. Symptoms of long term complications.

This is when the diabtes has already contributed to damage to organs in the body. For example, heart disease, deteriorating vision, loss of feeling or pain in the peripheries eg the toes and feet, impotence, kidney problems, lack of circulation to the leg arteries.

As well as these diabetes symptoms in type 2 diabetics, there may also be the following symptoms present, which are often conditions associated with diabetes type 2:

1. Obesity, especially 'central obesity' (high waist hip ratio)

2. Hypertension

3. High cholesterol

These conditions altogether with diabetes or pre-diabetes is also claled 'Syndrome X'.

So as you can see, there can be a viariety of different symptoms that can occur in diabetes.
